Hidden talents

I think everyone knows of or has watched those Pop Idol shows that have been syndicated across the globe. I must admit I’ve watched a few episodes myself, not so much for the talent but more for the self-deluding no-talent wannabees who make asses of themselves on national TV. Who can forget William Hung singing his version of “She Bangs”? Now before you get your knickers in a twist, I’m not saying that there aren’t talented singers who take part. However, by and large, the entertainment is all in the first few rounds where all the crazies come on stage and strut their stuff.

I think that the show’s finally unearthed a real talent who quite honestly, fits the bill of someone, hitherto unknown, with amazing ability and finally coming into the public eye. Meet Paul, the man who brought tears to my eyes…….

Spanish Sex Goddess

If you’re like me and have an eye for latina beauties, you’ll know what I’m talking about. The smoldering eyes, the long, flowing brown hair, the curves, the full, sensous lips….ay, Dios mio! By now, you’ve probably already watched the movie “Volver” by Almodovar and saw that scene where Penelope Cruz’s character sang for everyone in the restaurant. Well, let me now introduce you to the voice behind that song, Estrella Morente.

The daughter of a famous flamenco singer and married to a matador, she’s as spanish you can possibly get with the looks and a voice to match. Take a look at this video where she performs live at a talk show with Almodovar and Penelope Cruz watching, and tell me you don’t get shivers down your spine when she finishes.

The Second Coming

Since Maradona ascended the heights of the Azteca Stadium in Mexico to lift the holy grail of football trophies, the World Cup, the search had begun for the next “Great One”. Given the ability of Argentina (like Brazil) to produce talent after talent, it is pehaps unsurprising that we’ve had a string of youngsters called the Next Maradona for years. Some, like Pablo Aimar, have shown glimpses of talent approaching that of the original Pibe d’Oro but by and large, the realization of us seeing a new talent capable of making us gasp in awe has just not happened. Until now at least…..

You’ve probably heard the hyperbole following the goal he scored in the Copa del Rey against Getafe but is Lionel Messi truly the new herald for a second golden age for Argentina? I have to say that after having seen the boy play on numerous occasions, I have to concur that this lad has all the right tools to be crowned the new king. Nevermind the fancy footwork of a certain portuguese lad named after a former US president (you know who I’m talking about), Messi plays like he has the football glued to his boots, runs like the wind, has the vision of his equally talented team mate, Ronaldinho, and perhaps most importantly, the humility and lack of propensity for self-destructive behavior found in Maradona. No, he isn’t 6-feet tall with a matching physique to hold players off, but he doesn’t need it. Look at all the great players in history–Pele, Maradona, Stoichkov, Baggio….and the list goes on. These are players who have a footballing brain and the fleetness of thought to be one step ahead of their competitors. He’s not ready to be added to this illustrious list but barring any major injuries, I can think of no other “sure thing” in football these days aside from the imminent success of the boy who would become king.

Mark my words……Argentina, world champions 2010 with Messi at the helm.

Now, I submit to you the evidence, you be the judge. Credit the producer as shown in the video.

Ready, Set,….OK, GO

These days we get bombarded with hype about pretty much everything. This is the best car you can buy, or the best toothbrush or the best film of the year (just like the movie “300″……………not!). I think you’ll agree with me when I say much of it is hogwash. However, I was pleasantly surprised today when I checked out the winners of youtubes first annual awards.

One of the winners was a video made by the band Ok Go. Great music and very creative music video. If you haven’t heard of them, why not check them out yourself? I also threw in their latest video release, “Do What You Want” for your entertainment.

Hello world!

Bienvenido al mi sitio, welcome to my site! I’ve just packed up and moved to France, left all my friends behind, and now starting a new life with my lover. Over the next few months, I’m hoping to fill this blog about our adventures here in land of chateaux, Sir Lancelot and Camus, as well as talk about my passions. I hope you’ll be as entertained reading this blog as I am writing it. With that, I bid you, à bientôt, and see you back here soon.
